Rio Chillar

by Lars Haagen Petersen

Rio Chillar - October 2016

To go for a walk in the river Rio Chillar is one of the most beautiful things you can imagine. You might not believe it, but it's true - At least as long as you do it while the water is at a reasonable temperature, but I will recommend you do it in the autumn, when there are fewest tourists, otherwise there can be a little crowded.

Rio Chillar - October 2016

In the beginning you try to avoid getting wet, but when the trip is about to end and you have to get your feet back on land, you will miss the soft, warm water. One should also think that the feet would have become shriveled like raisins after up to several hours in the river, but it´s not the case - they just miss the water.

The breathtakingly beautiful Rio Chillar - October 2016

Rio Chíllar is a river in the eastern part of Málaga province in Spain. It originates in the Sierra de Almijara mountain range and flows into the Mediterranean just west of the city of Nerja. Most of the river flows through the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park, which is always open to the public. Rio Chillar has its name from the Arabic word “shilal”, which means “waterfall”.

The river was an important water source for the Moorish settlers in the area, who cultivated fruit trees and vegetables along its banks. The river was also a strategic place for defense against the Christian invaders, who tried to conquer Al-Andalus.

In the 20th century, Rio Chillar was used to produce electricity for Nerja and its surroundings. A dam and a hydroelectric power station were built in the upper part of the river, which can still be seen today. The water from the dam was led through some irrigation channels, that supplied the agricultural areas with water.

Today, Rio Chillar is a protected natural area, that belongs to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. It is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, who can enjoy the river’s beauty and biodiversity.

The river is home to many species of fish, birds, amphibians, insects and plants, some of them endemic or endangered. The hike along the Rio Chillar is a moderately difficult hike that requires good shoes, water and sunscreen. It is recommended to start early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds. The trip can take between 4 and 7 hours, depending on how far you want to go. It is important to respect nature and not leave litter or disturb wildlife.

An "Acherontia atropos", which in English is called The "African death's-head hawkmoth", is a large nocturnal swarmer that can be seen in the Rio Chíllar river.

The Route to Rio Chillar

To get to Rio Chillar, the easiest way is to drive to Nerja, drive up Avenida de la Constitución, turn left onto C. Mirto and park the car in the large car park there. You can drive closer to the river, but if you park further ahead you risk having your car removed by the authorities.

After having parked the car, continue on foot down the road, where you turn right onto the "Los Almachares" asphalt road, which runs under the A-7 motorway to a concrete factory. Here the road turns to gravel and leads on to the entrance of the scenic area.

Rio Chillar - October 2016

It is important to remember that the older you get the more you need to protect yourself against falling and this is best done by using a walking stick or two and ensuring that you use as non-slip shoes as possible. It can be tempting to just use some old, worn-out shoes and you might be able to manage with that, but again it is important that you can walk safely on the often slightly slippery stones. Especially on the return trip, where it goes downhill, it can be a bit of a challenge.

It goes without saying that a sprained foot or worse can become problematic in a place like this. For the same reason it´s better to be safe than sorry.

Having said this, it is also important to point out that the trip is exceptionally beautiful, quite unforgettable and in no way particularly demanding for most people of virtually any age - Actually, it's a real pleasure.

Rio Chillar - October 2016

The water rarely reaches higher than the knees and most of the time, only the ankles are covered.

At 4 kilometres into the park the river runs through three narrow crevasses in the mountain just 1 metre wide but more than 20 metres deep.

You should also be aware that if a lot of rain has just fallen in the mountains, it will shortly after come down the river to end up in the Mediterranean.

Rio Chillar - October 2016

Most people prefer to end the walk up river at the small waterfalls, - "Vado de Los Patos" - which takes approx. 2½ hours if you walk at a normal pace.
